We are:

Tony Foster (a.a.foster[at]hum.leidenuniv.nl): In 2020-2021, Tony will be teaching Dutch – English Translation in the minor Translation, as well as Advanced Translation and the Thesis Seminar in the MA Translation. Tony is our expert on legal translation, legal terminology, contrastive linguistics, academic writing, rhetoric and persuasion studies. If you would like to do a work placement or MA thesis project on something to do with comparative law, contrastive linguistics or EU terminology, then Tony is the man to talk to!

Katinka Zeven (k.l.zeven[at]hum.leidenuniv.nl): In 2020-2021, Katinka will be teaching English – Dutch Translation, Introduction to Translation Studies and Culture Studies in the minor Translation, as well as Literary Translation I & II and the Thesis Seminar in the MA Translation. Katinka is our expert on literary translation and stylistics, which she combines in projects that consider norms, tendencies and manipulations in the (re-)translation of literature. Talk to Katinka if you are thinking of analysing how the style of a particular novel can (should?) be retained in translation.

Lettie Dorst (a.g.dorst[at]hum.leidenuniv.nl): In 2020-2021, Lettie will be teaching Multilingual – Dutch Translation in the minor Translation and Translator’s Tools, Multimodal Translation, Subtitling in Theory and Practice and the Thesis Seminar in the MA Translation. Whatever course she’s teaching, Lettie will inevitably sneak in some theory and practice on analysing and translating metaphor. Her newest Quest is to try and find out how Machine Translation handles metaphor in different genres and languages. If you want to do a work placement at a subtitling company, or write an MA thesis on how style can be retained in multimodal forms of translation, Lettie will be happy as a clam. Or was it pleased as pie?

Susana Valdez (s.valdez[at]hum.leidenuniv.nl): In 2020-2021, Susana will be teaching Introduction to Translation Studies and Multilingual – English Translation in the minor Translation, as well as Translation Studies, The Translator’s Tools, Subtitling in Theory and Practice, Medical Translation and the Thesis Seminar in the MA Translation. Susana is our expert on technical and scientific translation and, in particular, medical translation. She combines these topics with translation and writing norms and reader’s expectations in empirical and cognitive studies. If you would like to do a work placement or MA thesis project on a technical or scientific text, medical translation or reader’s expectations of translation, then talk to Susana!

We look forward to teaching you!
